Wastewater Treatment Plant Process

Influent (untreated wastewater) comes into the plant.

The influent enters the Manual Bar Screen for primary treatment.

For this part of the treatment process, the larger debris is removed by the bar screen, for which then heads towards the Automated Bar Screen for even further removal of debris.

AUTOMATED BAR SCREEN

Once leaving the Automated Bar Screen, the wastewater enters into the Secondary Treatment Processes, where biological activity begins to take place.

The WWTP (Wastewater Treatment Plant) is an activated sludge plant, the biological processes further removes solids and contaminants from the water prior to entering disinfection.

For this Secondary Treatment, the wastewater enters the Aeration Basin and Trickling Filter processes.

For continued Secondary Treatment, the wastewater next enters the Secondary Clarifier, for further clarification of the water.

The wastewater next enters the disinfection area of the wastewater treatment plant.  At this point, chlorine gas is added to the wastewater at the Chlorine Contact Chamber.

The amount of chlorine used is controlled by a chemical feed regulator.

After disinfection, the chlorine is removed through a dechlorination process, where the wastewater is treated with sulfur dioxide gas.

After the dechlorination process, the wastewater is now defined as effluent (treated wastewater). The effluent is discharged through a flume where a flow meter is used to record the amount of treated water that will enter the Yadkin River.

At the effluent flume, a composite sampler is nearby that collected a daily 24-hour representative sample of the treated wastewater entering the river.  The collected sample is used to determine compliance with the NPDES permit (with regard to our effluent limits).
